How to Protect Your Mind, Rebuild Your Confidence, and Navigate Racism at Work Without Losing Yourself

You worked harder than anyone else in the room. And something still worked against you.

You wondered if you were imagining it. If the problem was you.

It wasn't.

The book that needed to exist

You were never
the problem.

UNMUTED is for the professionals who have been told they lack executive presence when what they actually lack is an organisation willing to recognise authority that doesn't look like its own. For the people whose ideas land differently depending on whose mouth they come from. For the ones carrying, for years, an invisible second job.

Why This Book Exists

Written because
it was needed.

Zara Brathwaite wrote this book because she needed it and it didn't exist. Not in the form she needed — one that was honest about what was happening, gave her real tools, and didn't require her to minimise her own experience before it would take her seriously.

Drawing on eight independent research sources, UNMUTED maps three levels of workplace racism that most organisations will never address — and gives you a complete, practical guide to navigating each one without losing yourself in the process.

Not theory. Not motivation. Actual tools for actual Tuesday mornings.

I needed a book that named what was happening without asking me to soften it first. One that gave me tools, not just validation. One that treated me as capable of holding the truth and the nuance at the same time.

The Research Framework

Three levels.
Most organisations
only address one.

The most damaging form of workplace racism isn't the loudest. It operates across three distinct levels simultaneously. UNMUTED maps all three — and gives you the tools for each.

01
Ambient
The daily texture of not quite belonging

The hundred small moments that are individually deniable but collectively devastating. Harder to name than overt discrimination. Consistently more damaging.

02
Structural
The patterns that only become visible over time

No single decision is necessarily discriminatory. Only the pattern is. Being valued — but never advanced. The criteria that shift each time you meet them.

03
Acute
The incidents overt enough to name

The level most training addresses — and the least representative of the total experience. Real and serious. But only part of the picture.

Inside the Book

A reckoning and a roadmap.

Four parts. Seventeen chapters. Not theory — actual tools, exact scripts for real moments, nervous system practices, and strategies built for your actual working life.

Part One

The Inside Story

What this environment is actually doing to you — the psychology, the neuroscience, the adaptations that are saving and costing you simultaneously.

  • Why it makes complete sense
  • Naming what this actually is
  • The tax nobody told you about
  • The adaptations saving — and costing — you
Part Two

The System

The official rules and the unofficial ones. Why excellence alone was never going to be enough. And what to do about that.

  • The two systems
  • Valued but not advanced
  • Not all work is equal
  • The cost of being the only one
Part Three

Survival & Stability

The daily tools that actually work. Scripts for real moments. Practices that rebuild from the inside rather than performing from the outside.

  • Stabilise first
  • Exactly what to say
  • Keeping hold of yourself
  • Rebuilding confidence
Part Four

Strategic Power

The staying and leaving conversation. Visibility. The kind of power nobody can take away. And how to build it from exactly where you are.

  • The real leaving conversation
  • Making your work unmissable
  • Power that's fully yours
  • You were never the problem
"Your voice was
never
the problem."

About the Author

She wrote the book
she once really needed.

Zara Brathwaite is a writer and advocate who has lived the reality this book addresses. She knows intimately the gradual shrinking, the constant self-doubt, and the deep exhaustion of trying to prove your worth in environments that were never designed to recognise it.

Despite the real difficulty and cost of that experience, she didn't emerge unscathed. But she emerged with something worth sharing.

Drawing from years inside corporate institutions and many honest, late-night conversations with others carrying the same invisible weight, she wrote the book she once really needed.

UNMUTED is both a reckoning and a roadmap — combining hard-won personal insight, rigorous research, and practical tools to help readers protect their minds, reclaim their confidence, and navigate racism at work without losing themselves.

She lives in London and believes, with considerable evidence, that those most shaped by difficult systems are often the ones best equipped to change them.

For HR & Leaders

What your people are carrying that your data isn't measuring.

Most organisations measure diversity at entry level. Very few measure what happens in the middle — the years where informal networks, sponsorship, and the distribution of strategic work determine whose career moves and whose stalls.

UNMUTED gives HR professionals a research-grounded framework to understand what their colleagues are navigating — not as a general concept but as specific, named, documented mechanisms with measurable costs.

Available for bulk purchase, team reading programmes, and as the foundation for facilitated workshops. Zara Brathwaite is available for speaking engagements and corporate sessions — audio format, for organisations worldwide.
